TRIGGER PHONE SHORTCUTS

Automate your daily routines by programming your NFC tag to trigger iPhone Shortcuts with a simple tap.

TL;DR: Create a Shortcut in the Shortcuts app, add an Automation, choose NFC, scan your tag, select your Shortcut, and save. Now tapping the tag runs your automation instantly.

Create or Choose Your Shortcut

Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. Either create a new Shortcut with the actions you want to automate (like toggling smart lights, sending a text, or opening an app), or select an existing Shortcut you've already created. Make sure to test it works before linking it to your NFC tag.

Create an NFC Automation

In the Shortcuts app, tap the Automation tab at the bottom. Tap the + button in the top right, then select Create Personal Automation. Scroll down and choose NFC from the list of automation triggers.

Scan Your NFC Tag

Tap Scan and hold your NFC tag near the top of your iPhone's back. Once detected, you can give it a name (like "Bedtime" or "Morning Routine"). Tap Next, then select the Shortcut you want to run when this tag is tapped.

Configure and Test

Turn off Ask Before Running if you want the automation to run immediately without confirmation. Tap Done to save. Now tap your NFC tag to your phone to test - your Shortcut should run automatically!

Troubleshooting

iPhone Doesn't Detect the Tag
  • Make sure your iPhone is unlocked - NFC automations require an unlocked screen
  • Hold the tag to the top-back of your iPhone, not the center
  • Remove thick cases that might block the NFC signal
Automation Doesn't Run When I Tap
  • Check that the automation is enabled in the Automation tab
  • Make sure 'Ask Before Running' is set to your preference
  • Try deleting and recreating the automation
Tag Works Inconsistently
  • The tag may be damaged - try with a different NFC tag
  • Ensure your Shortcut itself works when run manually
  • Check that Low Power Mode isn't interfering with NFC

F.A.Q.

Does this work on Android phones?

Android uses different apps for automation. Try Tasker or NFC Tools with Task support for similar functionality on Android devices.

Can one tag trigger different shortcuts?

No, each NFC tag is linked to one automation. However, you can create a Shortcut that uses conditional logic to do different things at different times.

Why does it ask for confirmation every time?

In the automation settings, make sure 'Ask Before Running' is toggled OFF. Some actions require confirmation for security reasons and can't be disabled.
